Pitched Roof Construction is different from other roof construction methods. Normally people construct two types of roofs- Flat and Sloping ceilings. The pitched roof is another name for sloping ceilings. It slopes downwards and is totally opposite of a flat roof. It contains a pitch of over 10 degrees. That means the design has two slopes connected with a central ridge at the top.

The roof is an essential part of building construction. To cover a building, make it complete; the roof is important. A roof increases a house’s value and protects humans also. According to places, building types, and different weather conditions, people construct different roofs.

Types of Pitched Roof Construction

There are many different types of pitched roofs in different areas.

Gable Roof

It has a triangular shape. A gable roof is simple and easy to construct. People often replace their old roofs with gable roofs. These roofs are common in cold climate areas.

Purlin Roof

Purlin is actually a horizontal beam. It helps the roof to support the roof deck’s weight. It also helps to give different shapes and designs to a pitched roof.

Hip Roof

This type of roof has slopes on all sides. These upward equal sides form the roof’s ridge. The hip roof design is complex but stable. Mansard Roof- It is an old and popular design. People also call it the French roof or Curb roof. It looks beautiful and provides space on the rooftop.

Trussed Roof

This type of roof frame is made of trusses. Previously people used rafters, but trusses replaced that. Truss is versatile and inexpensive.

Gambrel Roof

Gambrel is a two-sided roof. Each side contains dual-slopes, one steeper and one sallower. A gambler roof provides more storage space under it than other roofs.

Skillion Roof

It is a simple roof that offers a unique look. Skillion’s roof has a sharp pitch and focuses on minimalistic features. Some people believe that this roof helps to lessen temperature.

Butterfly Roof

It is a V-shaped roof and also is similar to butterfly wings. Two surfaces meet at the middle roof point from opposite edges. This design facilitates lots of light and ventilation scopes.

Bonnet Roof

This kind of roof has four sides with double slopes on every side. The roof contains a sharp pitch at the top than the lower one. It looks suitable for any building design.

Sawtooth Roof

It has sequences of ridges and two pitches. The sawtooth design contains a window feature too for light supply. Big commercial buildings construct sawtooth roofs.

Curved Roof

It is a different roof structure. It looks curved shed-style shape. The curves and side walls’ height vary from this roof. Sometimes it contains an entrance door too.

Pyramid Roof

This design looks like a pyramid. It has four sides that are made of square frames. It is actually a variation of the hip roof.

Dome Roof

Dome roofing system has an old long history. It takes a 360-degree radius style to form a dome-shaped roof. This roof design is long-lasting and energy-efficient.

In modern times we can see domes over religious buildings, sports stadiums, and various functional structures.

Construction Method of Pitched Roof

There are two methods of building a pitched roof. Those are-

Cut Roof

This is an established pitched-roof-making system. The method starts with cutting the timber on-site and making the roof. The materials are-

  • Rafters,
  • Purlins,
  • Joists,
  • Ridge boards,
  • Hangers,
  • Collars etc.

We should not change, cut, or modify any timber without a structural engineer’s suggestion. Otherwise, these may change the structure of a roof.

Truss Roof

This method needs trusses to make this kind of roof. Trusses are available in the factory. Every truss part is used to make a different part of a roof. That is why makers should not cut, modify, or change.

Maintenance of Pitched Roof

Any roof requires cleaning and maintenance. The building owners should regularly check the roofs for damage. The roofs can get moss, dry, damp, breakage, and other problems. Cleaning the gutter system is important.

The buildings with pitched roofs are mostly covered with slates as it has a risk of falling. And, it gives the safety of the cleaner while cleaning the roofs also. There are many ways of cleaning a pitched roof include-

  • Pressure washer,
  • Stiff brush,
  • Stiff brush, etc.

The cost depends on the build-up of dirt and cleaning methods.

There are several advantages people like to construct the pitched roof. Let’s discuss some of them-

Strong and Stable

Pitched roofs are strong and protect against bad weather. They cover well in storms, snowfall, or heavy rainfall. So, stability is its’ advantage.

Different Styles

From simple design to complex design, pitched offers many styles. For different types of buildings, different roofs are suitable. So, pitched roofs are versatile.

Good Ventilation

A sub-roof with a pitched roof process excellent ventilation of a building. It reduces water vapor in summer and cold in winter also. Thus, it balances the building’s temperature and provides a healthy inside climate.

Require less Maintenance

These kinds of roofs are good resistant. So, damages are not a frequent problem. Pitched roofs last over 50 years. Also, the repair and maintenance cost of a pitched roof is inexpensive.

Easy Insulation Installation

On a pitched rooftop, insulation installation is easy. Heat transfer via the ceiling is not a complex process. So, it also provides people with a comfortable living environment.

Easy Rainwater Drainage System

Compared with flat roofs, these roofs easily and quickly store rainwater. Again, it returns the stored rainwater to the environment via the easy drainage system.

Good for Energy Savings

As pitched roofs are good for the ventilation process, and these prevent energy loss. So, it helps in saving energy.

Facilitates with Additional Space

A pitched roof provides extra spaces. People can use them for living spaces or others. Again, we can make a space after finishing a roof. It also saves time and money for a new deck.

Setting Solar Panels is Easy

Installing solar is also simple on a pitched roof. The roofs also have the optimal angle of incidence that confirms maximum energy recovery.

So, these are the main facts you should know about Pitched Roof Construction.
